Verse for this season

The name of the lord is a strong tower

The righteous run in to it and are safe

                           Proverbs 18 v 10 KJV

Pastors Spring Message

Our country is in a nationwide quarantine, curfew and lockdown. Banning public and private gatherings and the laws and regulations are changing every day. We are not sure what tomorrow holds, but we are happy that we know who holds the future! God is in control of it all. We are in a season where we are seeing fear being spread across our nation. It’s important to ask ourselves the question, which side are we on? Are we contributing to the fear in the atmosphere or are we the ones injecting faith, hope and love into what seems hopeless?

We believe that God is calling us not to partner with fear, but to stand against it in our nations. That even in times of crisis, people may see there is a loving God who knows them, wants to have a relationship with them and has a plan for them! So, when we hear loved ones in panic, it’s our responsibility to speak faith, that God that may use us as his vessels of change. The future is unknown, no one knows how long the pandemic will last. Of course, this all raises an important question, considering the coronavirus how should Christians respond today? Inspired by those who have gone before us, perhaps I can offer three suggestions.

Firstly ,we should use this period of ‘’social distancing’’ to reacquaint ourselves with the big story of the bible in the unfolding story of God and the world that we see in the bible, we are presented with a robust and life giving account of who God is, what is the world is like, and what it means this is a story for the whole world.

Secondly, we need to ‘translate’ the bible into our everyday lives. This is the translation that really counts! We need to practically live out ‘’love of God and neighbour’’. We should follow advice for washing  hands, not shaking hands, and avoiding non-essential contact and travel, and support our neighbours by offering to do shopping ,collect parcels, post their mail, and ensure they have someone to talk to on the phone.

Thirdly ,we need to be sensitive to the fact that the current situation will unsettle people and uninhibited by their social bonds, prompt them to think about God and the purpose of life, perhaps for the very first time, and we need to ready for conversations about this.

We need to do the same, secure in the fact that ‘God is our refuge and strength, and ever-present help in trouble. ‘Psalm’ 46 v 1. But we can take this opportunity to be part of the rebuilding of society.

Trust by walking in a manner worthy of our calling, leading well, being faithful in what’s in front of us, and earning the trust of others for the future. And in this time of uncertainty, lets rely on God for our future. Because, as he said to king Jehoshaphat through his prophet Jahaziel ‘‘do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours’’

I would like to give you a few practical tips for this crisis.

(1) First and foremost, please get outside and get some sun….whatever you do ,please don’t stay locked up inside your house…that’s the worst thing you can do for your immune system right now .you need to get outside and get some fresh air and sunshine(while staying away from crowds). Now that we are in April, the weather is getting warmer and sunnier, and getting sun on your skin is the biggest thing you can do to boost your immune system right now.

So whatever you do ,please make an effort to get outside for daily walks in the sun(without having your skin fully covered, since you need your skin exposed to get the benefits),or get outside and do some gardening or some other yard work. Remember, getting outside doesn’t mean you have to be around a lot of people or do anything risky. You can get outside and stay safe while significantly boosting your immune system.

Aside from getting sunshine and fresh air, I have a few more tips below

(2) I have read from several infectious disease experts that people who are overweight or obese are at much greater risk of severe problems from coronavirus than people who are of  normal weight! and since all restaurant and bar are closed at this point, there’s no temptation to dine out, so you can simply make healthy foods at home and lose weight easier.

(3) another group at extreme risk of complications are people with insulin resistance and type two (2) diabetes… again it’s time to take this seriously.

Lastly, it’s important for everybody to stay calm and not panic, so we need to be realistic about this, and not panic. But stay safe and avoid any indoor places where there are lot of people. Get outside and get some sunshine and fresh air (aside from quality sleep, sunshine is the #1 thing to boost your immune system right now) …and now is also the perfect time to focus on losing weight and fixing health problems.

It is also the Easter time when we celebrate the fact that Jesus died, and his body was laid in the grave till he rose again on the third day. He broke out of death’s prison and took the keys of death with him. Although other people had died and come back, like Lazarus, they didn’t have the keys so eventually died again.

Holding the keys for us, Jesus says, don’t be afraid when your time come, I’ll show you the way everything will be alright because I will be with you.

The Editorial by Brother Joel

Welcome to the Dalston Shiloh Newsletter Spring Edition in the mighty name of Jesus. We really had a great start to 2020. We hit the ground running with a week of prayer and fasting, the momentum continued with the fellowship service held on the 12th January with an enthralling message about commitment from Bishop Hector. There was no time to rest on our laurels, on the 14th February we celebrated our 55th year with a thanksgiving service held on the 16th February to commemorate the occasion. We had Six original members of the congregation who were all presented with bouquets, we also had a moving testimony, from Pastor Lewis where he outlined his vision for the church. We look forward to many more years of worshipping our saviour the living God right here in Shiloh Dalston. Mother’s Day 22nd March was celebrated with some tributes and prayers for the Mothers and our prayers also go out to Sister Gloria and Sister Gerald for a speedy recovery.

As we all know, we are at the beginning of a significant time within the Christian calendar; the Easter Season also known as the holy week which is the foundation of the Christian faith. It was Palm Sunday, when Jesus rode triumphantly into Jerusalem, Matthew 21 v 8-9. Unfortunately, due to the current crisis Pastor Lewis had to cancel the Good Friday Service on 10th April and the Easter Sunday Service on the 12th April, but he may still give his sermon at another date. The baptism service that was to be held on Friday 17th April has also been postponed. However, if you would like to be a candidate or know someone who does, please do not hesitate to contact Pastor Lewis or Minister Woodley, They will be delighted to provide further information, you may also find more details on www.shilohdalstonchurch.org.uk.

31st May is the day of Pentecost Acts 2 v 1-4. This was the day when the Holy Spirit was sent from the Father as Jesus had promised to his disciples. On 21st June is Father’s Day; the celebration honouring Fathers; we wish them all a very special day.

The Three Stages of Salvation

(1) Justification:

Justification is the freedom from a charge or penalty. Being declared free or right.

Romans 5 v 1 Explain being justified by faith we then have peace with God, but it's through our Lord Jesus Christ. We can all obtain justification, but it's only when we accept the crucifixion and death of our saviour Jesus Christ. By believing in our heart and confessing with our mouth that the Lord Jesus Christ raised from the dead according to Romans 10 v 9.

2 Corinthians 5 v 21: ‘For he has made him to be sin for us who knew no sin that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.’ Romans 5 v12, 17,18 explains by one-man sin entered the world, and death by sin, so death passed upon all men, for that all have sin Romans 3 v 23. By one-man offence death reign by one, much more have received abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one Jesus Christ. So, since judgement came upon all men to condemnation. Even so by the righteousness of Jesus Christ gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

Justification is being in right standing with God, regardless of what crime offence or charge you previously had before. Anyone who is truly justified through Jesus Christ, will always be humble and testify of his or her previous condition wherein they were.

In conclusion, the fruit of someone who has been justified, will be kindness, mercy, love, justice and forgiveness. And It signifies the acquittal of one who is tried before God; that person should be good and upright. Justification is the finished work of God. Once a person is justified, there is nothing else he needs therefore salvation is assured.

2) Sanctification:

The word sanctification is derived or taken from the word sanctify, which means something, or someone being reserved or set a part for sacred purpose or use. For example, when God gave the Ten Commandments to the children of Israel, they were specifically told that the sabbath day was to be honoured as a holy day why? because it was hallowed, holy, a day of rest Exodus 20 v 10-11 Also, from Aaron and his sons were consecrated or set apart as priest to offer sacrifices Exodus 28v 1 Based on my understanding of the word sanctification, I will place them in three categories

(1) instantaneous sanctification that which occurs immediately after one’s conversion 1 Corinthians 1 v 2

(2) progressive sanctification meaning to advance or excel to a higher position 2 Corinthians 3v 18

(3) complete or final sanctification, no further advancement, this he speaks of complete transformation by our lord Jesus Christ 1 John 3 v 2, 1 Corinthians 15 v 51

Sanctification is an ongoing process of growth where we become more Christlike the act of being saved 1 Corinthians 1 v 18 ,1 Thessalonians 5 v 23.

By Minister Woodley

(3) Glorification:

When does glorification take place? it will take place at the second coming of Jesus Christ,1 Corinthians 15 v 42-45 For the trumpet will sound, and the dead in Christ will be raised and will be transformed. The believer will be made glorious, holy, and blameless, Romans 8 v 30. The body is then redeemed. Philippians 3 v 21, which is the believer's deliverance and liberty, as a result the glorified body becomes immortal Romans 2 v 7, imperishable, powerful, and spiritual. The reward of glorification brings participation in the kingdom of God, where those who has died in Christ are given resurrection bodies Romans 8 v 23  even to the point of reigning with Christ 2 Timothy 2 v 10 -12 , glorification is partaking of God's own glory John 14 v 3 Those who know the Lord will enjoy a perfect eternity with a glorified body that is perfect free from sin how it was in the beginning, and believers will be with the Lord forever. In conclusion, we will at last be presented by Christ in perfect holiness, and complete righteousness, and in immortality Jude verses 24-25.

Youths Services

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

For many years we have been praying and hoping that our church would cater and reach the young in our community. 2020, is the year that we would like to devise a programme that is designed to do just that!

We are excited to announce that Shiloh will be hosting 9 summer play scheme catering for children aged 5-11 years old, which will be for 2 weeks in the church hall. This will commence from 20th July-31st July. We will be organising a series of child focus activities which will include art and craft, board games, cooking and sewing, puppet making, dancing, singing, and drama, we also hope to have discussions on topics such as drugs, healthy eating ,and internet safety etc.

This is an Outreach programme to reach out to our local community, we will be running this scheme like all other play schemes in the borough with our vision to spread the good news. This will be done by inviting the children from the play scheme to take part in our nativity play in December 2020. We believe we can spread the salvation message to at least three generations: children, parents and grandparents so we need everyone on board. Please be part of this by volunteering your time.

We need the church to pray as there are many obstacles to conquer.

Pray for us as we navigate our way through the red tape and criteria’s, pray for the parents of the children that will be attending and for the children that their hearts will be touched and the seeds that we plant will bear fruit, in Jesus name Amen

The application forms are now available. If you have any questions or would like further information, please see Sister Veronica, Sister Judy, or Sister Joan who will be happy to help you.

Investing for the Future

Shiloh is now 55 years old, in order to see another 55 years, the church will first need to win the youth within its congregation, before reaching outside its walls. The Gospel is for all ages and backgrounds, but how it is delivered needs to be tailored to be relatable to the audience. Since the beginning of the year, God has placed the youth on my heart, to create a new fellowship with the youth. A place where they can come together and build up a relationship with Christ and with one another, that starts at their level. Every Sunday morning, the teens of the church fellowship together and learn, through following God's word, how they can experience his joy, peace and love in their lives. I pray that in time, their own personal relationship will be strong enough to surrender to God, begin their own ministry for Christ and help build the church further.

Shiloh Cherubim’s

Children are never too young to start learning and living the gospel of Jesus. It is easy to find excuses to stay home, but even on the most stressful Sunday morning, it is important that parents bring their children to church. Children see what we do and the struggle to attend worship reinforces in them that going to church is a priority. You will be Creating a habit in them that will last a lifetime. If you or neighbour have any nieces, nephews or grand children please invite them, their interest and development will be supported by Sister Lynette and Sister Sabrina, they will be encouraged to be spirit led and to trust in the Lord.

Testimony

God is in control

God knows us. If you ask me, I will say “I am not good at maths’’ and I don’t like numbers. I have gone for so many jobs that I didn’t get because I failed the maths test; been upset because I so wanted those jobs and couldn’t get past that stage of the recruitment.

Now, I am working in finance, totally outside my comfort zone. Who knew? Only God. If you had ever told me that I would get a job in that area, I would have laughed hard and said that is impossible. But with God, anything is possible.
